I think the main concern with most people is that the site doesn't go to far from the identity of CNN and that if Iconography is the path you want to choose, your going to really need to make sure it's thought out.
The icons could be useful but I think what needs to be clear is that how is this gonna make surfing CNN's site more interactive or easier. The benefits are toward the audience we must remember.
Maybe you can make the header part more graphic and the content of the news(body paragraph)appear on rollover or something. anyways Kool and Awesome turtle!
